‘Adventure of a life time!’ Katherine Conner mimicked. Her momma always told her if it looked too good to be true, honey is was and run like hell.

Only she hadn’t done that at all. Sorry Mom. She wanted to see other worlds. See what was out there and how else could you do that but with your own shop in a new part of the universe on a Space Station right?

It had been such a good deal. Five year contract with options on a reduced rate, incentives like free board and food allowance and free travel back for a holiday every two years! How could she say no? So she didn’t and signed.

Now, she just had to get there………. Alive…

  A word from the Author.

Hello, I'm Jessie and I thank you for buying this book! I know you did not have to.

There are so many choices out there. It's a wonderful feeling knowing that someone else will enjoy one of my stories. And for me, it's about telling a story that I'd like to read myself.

I am not caught up in POV or literacy genius. It's simply not me or my style and I will never be that person, so I apologize to all those who are focused on the POV and the genius of literacy. I envy those that are.

On the days where my pain and meds stop my thinking processes, writing these books have been my lifeline. It reminds me that I still have the ability to rise to the challenge and that I refuse to go quietly into the night.

But, I'm a person just like you, who wants to bring some passion into my life and now, hopefully yours. Put a good story out there that's hard to put down, that brings some escapism, sexy fun and pleasure into our reading. We all love a bit of that!

And, I hope I achieve that for you in this book. I sincerely hope you enjoy it so much that you want to look out for the next in the series. (Coming soon) And if I'm lucky, you will have had such a good time, you'll recommend it to your friends and I thank you kindly.

My very best wishes to you and yours. Jessie x

Galactic Cyborg Heat Series Book 17. Torc.

  Chapter One

He ran systems checks while the passengers ID and tickets were processed, scanned and then shown to their quarters. The time when passengers had to be in stasis was long gone. Jump capabilities had seen to that and the Admiral’s wife. Kim was a genius with engines. Each new prototype was better than the last. The universe was becoming a small place. Just as well it continued to expand as the Empire did.

It was nothing more than a two-month trip to the Orion Space Station Delta from the last Old Earth space dock. A cruise they called it, but this was no cruise ship. Top of the line military cruiser more like. Passengers got on and got off at three different locations. All on the way to the ultimate stop. Space Station Delta now a Cyborg Empire Space Station and in their space.

Looking at the numbers, it was clear the recruiters had out done themselves this time. No families on this ship. Those were the rules. They only travelled on the well protected routes. Names and numbers filtered across his optics. 256 New passengers, each with their unique identification that could be tracked throughout the ship at all time, were going straight to the Space Station. Some to open businesses others, to work for someone else.

It had been nearly three years since the Station raid that had helped to change everything for the Empire. Humans tended to have short memories. They didn’t appreciate security delays, tended to be aggravated with the delays and protocols or why they were there in the first place. Things, that would save their lives if under attack. But they were not Cyborg and needed the reminder. The process was the process. They either accepted it or did not get on. It was that simple. Anyone who gave them too much trouble didn’t get on either. And if there was a problem during the voyage, they made a detour they paid for and dropped off. Willingly or not. No one messed with his ship or mission.

Not that any of that should have been news to anyone on this ship. Cyborgs not only held the Space Station and several worlds but they’d taken over all the trading routes too. It had become too dangerous for humans alone to traverse. They’d been too many attacks. Too many lost cargos and people to the pirates that still raided the trading routes. Still out there, planning new attacks and the Empire had to be prepared for any enemy. Big or small. They no longer hid from the world. They had their own and they would protect it.

Cyborgs had been kept hidden once, at risk more times than Torc cared to remember and as he thought it, the data on that flowed across his optic to remind him. Cyborgs would never let that happen again.

Since they’d created their own Empire, they’d found trusted commercial companies to work with. Supplying materials and food throughout the Empire. The Empire in turn provided plenty of ships for security. Sadly others who were not interested in Cyborg escorts had still tried it alone. There had been far too much pirate activity and doing so came with a warning but those ships in private hands, had then lost a number of good ships and people. The Empire respected free will but refusing to work with Cyborgs was dangerous. Too many people had been lost. Each one, a blow to them all.

The Empire made the only decision that could be made. No trade with the Empire unless Cyborgs ran all the shipping and security. Humans helped, still owned the ships even, but paid for upgraded engines the Empire insisted upon and Cyborgs ran the security. Their engines could out run anything the pirates had and they had the skills to defeat any aggressor. On their watch, they lost no one. But that didn’t stop everyone. Th ere were still those that wanted to try their luck and did. A few made it too but far too many had to be rescued or worse, were now gone.

Torc connected his neuro net to his bursar. Are they all loaded?

The last nine are coming through now.

  Good, starting engines.

  Affirmative.

Torc connected to his helm. Start engine warm up.

  Affirmative.

Comms. Give me ship wide communications.

  Comms open.

Torc started the agreed speech that all Captains were obliged to give out when carrying passengers. If the Empire sent a ship like his to do a pick up, it was for a reason. Normally heavily escorted cruisers went on routes. But every now and then, the Empire needed to check something out and would make a return journey by adding to the trade route. These were military ships and didn’t need an escort. They were it.

“Ladies and Gentleman, this is your Captain speaking. We will be warming up engines in just a moment. You will feel the vibrations throughout the ship. This is perfectly normal before running silently. We are boarding our last passengers now and will be on our way shortly. It is a two-month voyage to the Orion Space Station Delta in the Cyborg Empire. If anyone wishes to change their mind, now is the time to do it. Once on our way, we will not be stopping or coming back until the next ship is due. Unless there is an unforeseen circumstance. I would remind you that you have chosen to travel on a military transport ship not a luxury cruise liner. The ships waiting staff are here to assist you. Cyborgs are not. They are security. It will be very much up to you, to make your own amusement. To that end, you will find a number of vid rooms, fitness rooms, a number of classes open to you, a library and activities to keep you occupied. Each of you have a meal seating timetable, please keep to it. And I would suggest everyone knows where to find medical and the staging areas in case of an emergency. As informed, we will be travelling through space that is not, completely secure. That is impossible to do at the current time. Therefore, as with any ship, please ensure you know the evacuation drills and locations of the off-worlders and life pods. You will find them on all the maps on every level. I would also remind all the unattached females, that unless it is genuinely urgent, my men are off limits. Please ensure you read the information stationed in everyone’s quarters. This will answer all of your questions.

“Should anyone have a request that is not in there, please do so through the communications devices throughout the ship. In addition, there are a number of emergency alarms appropriately positioned throughout this ship. These are only to be activated in the event of an emergency, an emergency not covered in the information provided. Falsely declaring an emergency can cause delays and are not recommended. My men will be stationed throughout the ship and tomorrow we will start the emergency evac protocols. This is compulsory, every person on this ship will take part as stated in your contract with us. Should this ship be attacked, every person must act quickly and know what they are doing. Doing that, may save your life and the person next to you. I thank you for your co-operation and we welcome you to the Empire.”

  Ship wide off.

  Affirmative.

Bit cold boss… might scare some of the humans

Better that than dead because they didn’t listen.

Iced, his comms officer gave a mental nod. Roger that.

Jesus, that wasn’t exactly warm and fuzzy was it... “ID card, contract and travel pass.” Kate looked at the Cyborg and tried not to stare as she handed over her papers and swallowed. He was, huge! Four more were standing around, arms across their chests at doorways indicating to the passengers which way to go. The one going through her personal papers looked similar to the others. As in big, huge, and damn, really good looking. Most rocking the long hair and leather. No one had mentioned that in the ad….. Kate bit her lip. Maybe they should have. The women would be piling up….

“Thank you. You are in birth 8b, deck C. There are two other business owners either side of you should you wish to make connections.” He turned to one of the four, who dropped his arms and indicted a direction along the corridor. Kate grabbed her paperwork and the handle on her suitcase and started towards him.

Then remembered her cargo and turned back. “Your cargo is already on board,” he told her without looking up. Guess he was used to that one…. Kate nodded absently and continued to walk in the direction the soldier had told her.

Her excitement at finally being on board was dampened a bit. The ship looked hard from the outside, all black sleek metal and those guns…. Inside, it wasn’t much better. Gray everywhere. Not that she’d expected it to be all glitz and glamor. She knew what she was getting and happy to take the discount for it. It was a happy coincidence that this one had been put on the rota and offered. It had saved her a third of the original price of the cruiser. All that extra luxury and security came at a price. Luckily for her, she didn’t have children to worry about. That would have excluded her from bring able to take this ship. Kate trooped along. Checking out each map she came to it to make sure she was in the right place, then showed her berth ticket to the Cyborg at each section. Her spirits lifted seeing the social areas and the coffee bars. Ok then…. not too shabby… her excitement rising, she eagerly moved back into the corridors as directed. She’d be checking that out later…

He felt the connection to his neuro net and opened it. Last one on board ready to go.

Acknowledged, he replied. Helms ready to leave port.

  Affirmative.

  ***

Kate pulled the dress from her luggage and held it up. Not too crushed thank goodness…. Reception dinner for those who’d come on board seeking to establish business with the Empire was the first night on board. She’d not been sure what to expect and eventually gone with the reliable little black dress. Of her own creation. A twist on the ‘reliable’ title. Heart shaped neckline. Deep in the rear and a cross over skirt that was a little revelling on the leg when you walked. A few sparkles here and there, a little lace to hide the deep cut. Perfect.

Shaking it out she hung it on the back of the door while unpacking the rest. She couldn’t fault the room. It was spacious enough. If a little unitarian. A good size bed and study area, vid screen, storage, a replicator and a decent bathroom with a huge walk in shower. Way too big for her. It was more than one human needed and she was sure these rooms hadn’t been made for humans at all. They carried too much space and were Cyborg size. Kate guessed the ships were used to carry troops as well as civilians when needed. It made sense.

Going to the replicator she asked for coffee, strong and black. It did its thing and dispensed it in a standard mug. If she wanted something finer, she had to tell it. It was the same with all replicators. Everything came in standard unless you told it you wanted something special. Kate took the hot beverage out and sat on the only chair in the room apart from the one at her desk. It was in a little snook, facing the vid screen on the opposite wall. Lifting the cup she breathed in the aroma. It was good, taking a sip, it was better than she’d expected.

Kate thought about the welcome message. It hadn’t been very welcoming at all. All business and clearly Cyborg in nature. They weren’t known for being all warm and fuzzy. But that voice, had been……. Interesting. Strong, with warming deep notes. There was no denying she liked the sound of it. It had a continental slant to it that she hadn’t expected. Like the person had been from or had lived in that part of the world prior to everything going to shit. An old colony maybe? From one of those European countries as were before the last war. But that didn’t make sense to her.
